Songs from 4th Nourse

There are certain songs or bands that always take me back to Carleton. Here are a few of mine that I associate with our first year. I'm sure you've got some similar songs of your own - add yours in the Comments or drop me a line. We'll put together a Reunion playlist from the submissions.

In no particular order, my songs and associations:
  • U2 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
  • U2 Where The Streets Have No Name
  • U2 Pride (In The Name of Love)
  • U2 New Year's Day
(Thanks, Jason, for making me a committed U2 fan.)

  • R.E.M. Fall on Me
  • R.E.M. I Am Superman
(Scott singing in Spanish in the Evans dishroom....)

  • Depeche Mode People Are People
  • Depeche Mode Blasphemous Rumours
  • The Cure Just Like Heaven

(One of these always seemed to be coming from Chris & Jon's room.)

  • Sting Fortress Around Your Heart
(Dave helping me with Calc homework.)

  • O.M.D. If You Leave
(Chris & Terri and a certain R.A.)

  • Peter Gabriel In Your Eyes
  • Yaz Only You
  • New Order Bizarre Love Triangle
  • Depeche Mode Never Let Me Down Again
  • Level 42 Something About You
  • UB40 Red Red Wine

(Really, could you get away from these? Somehow they're very Musser to me....)

Pleasantly innocuous, Chris. You must have edited that. These are from my "Ah Ben Hypmotized" 3rd Davis mix tape (cassettes don't lie...):

Largely brought to us by The Rumbler:
The Suburbs Superlove
The Cure Let's Go To Bed
The Cult She Sells Sanctuary
The 'Mats Waitress in the Sky

From elsewhere on the floor (admittedly even sometimes from my/Christine's room):
REO Speedwagon Keep On Lovin' You
INXS Need You Tonight
New Order Bizarre Love Triangle
Whitney Houston I Wanna Dance With Somebody
George Michael I Want Your Sex
Paul Simon You Can Call Me Al
The Nylons The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Phil Collins In The Air Tonight
Steve Winwood Higher Love
Poison I Want Action
Prince I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man

... and lastly, but WAY not leastly, and Christine still probably hasn't forgiven me for this....
The Violent Femmes Blister In The Sun.

Someone needs to post a What We Listened To Our 4th Year list. I want to show (or just believe?) that my tastes expanded and improved a bit....

I remember listening to the Indigo Girls "Closer to Fine" my junior year abroad. Was I actually with it, or was I behind? (Can't trust a music major who o.d.-ed on Mozart.) Someone back me up on this, or don't if it's too embarrassing.

I think my roommate in London listened to Richard Marx, something about "right here waiting for you". He was not from Carleton if that helps. Marcus Young

Anyone remember MC Hammer and Can't Touch This? And how about this classic: "More than Words Can Say" by some hair band. You could not get away from it Senior year. And for those who want to dig deeper: C&C Music Factory, Gonna Make you Sweat; EMF, Unbelievable; Jesus Jones, Right Here Right Now; L.L. Cool J, Mama said Knock You Out; and Madonna, Justify mY Love. Wait, I remember listening to "Bust a Move" off campus Sophmore year. God, the agony just keeps coming. Word up to Marcus: Mozart, Beethoven and Copland were big study hits in Francie and my room!

De La Soul's 3 Feet High And Rising was enjoyed enormously during my sophomore year in Evans A column (3rd floor quint), as was Bob Mould's Workbook and Guns 'n' Roses Appetite For Destruction. I know I listened to a lot of Tom Waits my freshman year - Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years - as well as Big Star and Velvet Underground. And I know Dawn will agree that the following were staples of Luv House turntables our senior year:

"Groove Is In The Heart," Deeee-lite

"Starfish & Coffee," Prince

"Fool's Gold," Stone Roses

Closing Time, entire record - Tom Waits

It's all coming back to me....Dawn, Lisa, Carin, help me out here...

Pleasantly innocuous? Well, that's the description I strive to get from people. Thanks, Arah. ;-)

The Cure definitely comes to mind for me. And how about something from Something Fierce and the Gear Daddies. I'm not sure which songs, however.

Yes!!
The Cure "Why Can't I be You" also comes to mind. How 'bout some BoDeans and The Replacements? Everyone should dig deeper into their old CD stands for the ridiculous. I've got Salim Tabit and Laura Rossiter on the band wagon for reunion as well as this particular discussion. BTW: Salim has never attended a reunion!! 1 down 24 to go!!! Just had a thought: How about "The Humpty Dance" and BBB "Poison." Martha and Chris are being way too cool for school. You only got the "good" songs. Dig deeper and find the creepy ones that we were really dancing to. Melissa, I don't remember that Tom Waits album. What is on there that I might remember? Good call on DeeeLite and "Starfish and Coffee." How about "Rasperry Beret" and "Cream?"

Here I am trying to keep things classy, and Elena comes along and drags us into the gutter! Arrgh, Raspberry Beret - now I'll have that song in my head for the next several interminable hours.

Okay, you want cheese? You've got it. (I'll defend myself by noting I had to look these up on the iTunes Music Store list of Top 100 for 1988):

George Michael - Faith
Rick Astley - Never Going to Give You Up
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth

and... wait for it...

Terence Trent D'Arby - Wishing Well

Satisfied? (I feel so dirty....)

:-)

Nice work Chris! That was awesome! You have boldly gone where I started! I just took a shower and I feel dirty. Those entries are truly bottom of the barrel. Terence Trent D'Arby is an inspired call.

Let's see if some one came halp me out with the name of that two-man group from England who got caught lip-synching their albums as well as their concerts. One of their songs went "Girl you know it's true; I, I, I, I love you," I think. They always wore really bright suits in, like, neon pink and green and orange and had really long dreds. I cannot come up with their name. I think one of them OD'd or killed himself a few years ago. Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

But lest Chris get any sleep for the next month, two words: Vanilla Ice. Sweet dreams to Chris and the rest of class o' '91!

Ah, Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice. Truly, Elena, you have no shame. Perhaps it's something about vanilla that just captures the sheer mediocrity of both of these acts.

Martha mentioned Something Fierce. I just found this great link to Alumni Music at the Carleton bookstore, including some old Something Fierce CDs. Great stuff. I didn't include them in my collection above because I was ignorant of them our first year, but once that got corrected at a Sayles concerts (and later the Cave), I became a big fan. Two of the original three band members are class of '86. Maybe we'll see them at reunion.

I was at a party the other night and someone mentioned Trip Shakespeare. Didn't they play our Spring Concert or something? Come to think of it, who did play Spring Concert our first year?
